Brief history:
Gold mineralization on the Lac Fortune property was originally discovered at the beginning of the century. A considerable amount of exploration and development work was carried out on the property between 1910 and 1946. The property hosts five known gold bearing zones located within the north dipping Lac Fortune Shear.
In 1981, Ressources Minières Rouyn (now Richmont) acquired 100% ownership of the Lac Fortune property. Underground and surface exploration campaigns conducted over the 1984-1988 period, and again in 1997, yielded non-economical results. While not an immediate priority for Richmont, longer term plans for this property include reassessing geological data in order to define new drilling targets.
Geological characteristics:
Mineralisation is comprised in quartz-carbonate veins within the Lac Fortune shear, a small shear zone parallel to the Francoeur-Wasa shear. The shear zone is approximately 25 metres large and consists of a series of inverse faults. The mineral deposit is characterized by irregular distribution of native gold within discontinuous quartz veins, which results in a large nugget effect.
